What Casgevy is

Casgevy (exagamglogene autotemcel) is made by Vertex Pharmaceuticals. The US FDA approved Casgevy on 8 December 2023 for sickle cell disease and on 16 January 2024 for transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia, for people 12 and older. On 1 July 2026 the FDA extended its use to patients 2 years and older.

How it is given: The patient's own blood stem cells are collected, edited in a lab using CRISPR/Cas9, and given back as a one-time infusion after high-dose chemotherapy (conditioning). This happens at an authorized treatment center and needs a hospital stay. The chemotherapy before the infusion carries serious risks that the treating team will explain.

How access works in Qatar

Casgevy is given only at specialized treatment centers. It is not a medicine a family can collect, or a clinic can give in an outpatient room.
