Is Fayuvi available in Bahrain? How families get Fayuvi (rebisufligene etisparvovec-hopf)
A plain answer for families in Bahrain, checked against FDA, manufacturer and regulator sources.

Is Fayuvi available in Bahrain?
Fayuvi (rebisufligene etisparvovec-hopf) is an FDA-approved one-time AAV9 gene therapy for Sanfilippo syndrome type A (MPS IIIA) in children. Fayuvi is not on NHRA's Registered Medicine Price List (version dated 7 September 2026, 5,560 entries) or on its Temporary Importation Medicines List (dated 19 January 2025). We checked both on 17 October 2026. Fayuvi is given only at specialized treatment centers, so for most families in Bahrain the realistic route is treatment at a qualified center abroad, after a referral from the treating specialist. If a hospital in Bahrain wants to give it locally, the manufacturer must agree to supply that hospital and the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) must approve the import. Reserve Meds helps organize the referral and logistics. We do not prescribe.
- Registration in Bahrain: not on NHRA's registered list (7 September 2026) or temporary importation list (19 January 2025), checked 17 October 2026.
- Legal route: Treatment at a qualified center abroad, or a hospital import request if the manufacturer agrees.
- Who applies: your treating specialist refers the patient to a qualified center; a hospital in Bahrain applies to NHRA only if the manufacturer agrees to supply it.
- Timeline: We give you a written timeline estimate once we see the hospital file. The regulator and the manufacturer set their own timelines.
- Medicine price: quote on request. Every case gets a written custom quote before you commit.
What Fayuvi is
Fayuvi (rebisufligene etisparvovec-hopf) is made by Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical. The US FDA approved it on 17 September 2026 for the neurologic manifestations of mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIA (MPS IIIA, Sanfilippo syndrome type A) in pediatric patients with preserved neurodevelopmental function. It is given as a single intravenous (IV) infusion, given in a specialized healthcare setting.
It is the first FDA-approved treatment for Sanfilippo syndrome type A. Ultragenyx said the FDA granted standard (full) approval. The treating team will explain the monitoring needed before and after a gene therapy infusion.
At approval, Fayuvi was approved only in the United States. Ultragenyx announced in October 2026 that it had submitted a marketing application to the European Medicines Agency.
Registration status in Bahrain
Fayuvi is not on NHRA's Registered Medicine Price List (version dated 7 September 2026, 5,560 entries) or on its Temporary Importation Medicines List (dated 19 January 2025). We checked both on 17 October 2026. The same registered list does include other specialty therapies, such as Zolgensma, Casgevy and Elevidys, so it does cover this kind of medicine.
NHRA updates its lists. Ask the hospital pharmacy to confirm the current status with NHRA's pharmaceutical products regulation section before anything is filed.
The legal route in Bahrain
Fayuvi is a one-time infusion given in a specialized healthcare setting. Children must still have preserved neurodevelopmental function, so the treating team will assess the child first. Timing matters for this disease.
For a family in Bahrain, that leaves two realistic routes. First, treatment at a qualified center abroad, after your specialist refers you and the center accepts the patient. Second, a hospital in Bahrain asks the manufacturer, Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical, whether it will supply that hospital. If the manufacturer agrees, the hospital still needs import approval from the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA). We cannot promise that a manufacturer will agree.
How a hospital import request works in Bahrain, if it is ever needed:
Under NHRA Circular No. (41) of 2020, government and private hospitals must get NHRA's permission before they issue a purchase order for a medicine that is not registered in Bahrain.
The circular asks that the medicine is important and has no registered alternative in Bahrain, is registered with the Gulf Health Council or in a GCC country, is registered with a reference authority such as the US FDA, and is marketed in its country of origin.
Some medicines for rare diseases, emergencies and tumors with no registered alternative can be excused from the registration and marketing conditions, through NHRA's list of emergency medicines or with Board approval.
The request goes to NHRA by email with the application form, a Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (CPP) or registration certificate from a reference authority, and a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certificate. NHRA's 2022 application form is signed by the importing hospital, the agent or the marketing authorization holder, who takes full responsibility for the product's quality and safety.
Who does what
- Your treating specialist decides whether Fayuvi is right for the patient and writes the letter.
- The hospital refers the patient, or files a local import request if that becomes possible.
- The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) decides whether to approve an import of a medicine that is not registered.
- Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical makes Fayuvi and decides where it can be supplied.
- Reserve Meds can help organize records and logistics, and keeps your family updated. We do not give medical advice.
Documents you will usually need
- A referral letter from the treating specialist: diagnosis, test results and why this treatment is being considered
- Genetic or laboratory reports that confirm the diagnosis, translated into English where needed
- Recent clinic notes, imaging and a list of past treatments
- Passport and travel documents, if treatment happens abroad
- A funding plan: personal funds, insurer approval, or a government treatment-abroad decision
Timeline, step by step
- Referral. Your specialist prepares a referral letter and the medical records.
- Center review. A qualified treatment center reviews the records and decides whether the patient is eligible.
- Funding and travel. The family confirms funding and plans travel and accommodation.
- Preparation. The center runs tests and, for some products, collects cells or tissue to make the treatment.
- Treatment and follow-up. The patient is treated and then followed up by the center and the home specialist.
We give you a written timeline estimate once we see the hospital file. The regulator and the manufacturer set their own timelines.
