Is Fayuvi available in Saudi Arabia? How families get Fayuvi (rebisufligene etisparvovec-hopf)

A plain answer for families in Saudi Arabia, checked against FDA, manufacturer and regulator sources.

Reviewed by the Reserve Meds clinical operations team on 13 October 2026.

Is Fayuvi available in Saudi Arabia?

Fayuvi (rebisufligene etisparvovec-hopf) is an FDA-approved one-time AAV9 gene therapy for Sanfilippo syndrome type A (MPS IIIA) in children. As of 13 October 2026, we found no public record that Fayuvi is registered by SFDA in Saudi Arabia. Fayuvi is given only at specialized treatment centers, so for most families in Saudi Arabia the realistic route is treatment at a qualified center abroad, after a referral from the treating specialist. If a hospital in Saudi Arabia wants to give it locally, the manufacturer must agree to supply that hospital and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) must approve the import. Plan in months, not weeks (our planning estimate, not a promise). Reserve Meds helps organize the referral and logistics. We do not prescribe.

  • Registration in Saudi Arabia: not found in public sources as of 13 October 2026. Your hospital confirms before filing.
  • Legal route: Treatment at a qualified center abroad, or a hospital import request if the manufacturer agrees.
  • Who applies: your treating specialist refers the patient to a qualified center; a hospital in Saudi Arabia applies to SFDA only if the manufacturer agrees to supply it.
  • Timeline: several months (not a promise).

What Fayuvi is

Fayuvi (rebisufligene etisparvovec-hopf) is made by Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical. The US FDA approved it on 17 September 2026 for the neurologic manifestations of mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIA (MPS IIIA, Sanfilippo syndrome type A) in pediatric patients with preserved neurodevelopmental function. It is given as a single intravenous (IV) infusion, given in a specialized healthcare setting.

It is the first FDA-approved treatment for Sanfilippo syndrome type A. Ultragenyx said the FDA granted standard (full) approval. The treating team will explain the monitoring needed before and after a gene therapy infusion.

At approval, Fayuvi was approved only in the United States. Ultragenyx announced in October 2026 that it had submitted a marketing application to the European Medicines Agency.

The legal route in Saudi Arabia

Fayuvi is a one-time infusion given in a specialized healthcare setting. Children must still have preserved neurodevelopmental function, so the treating team will assess the child first. Timing matters for this disease.

For a family in Saudi Arabia, that leaves two realistic routes. First, treatment at a qualified center abroad, after your specialist refers you and the center accepts the patient. Second, a hospital in Saudi Arabia asks the manufacturer, Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical, whether it will supply that hospital. If the manufacturer agrees, the hospital still needs import approval from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA). We cannot promise that a manufacturer will agree.

How a hospital import request works in Saudi Arabia, if it is ever needed:

Because Fayuvi is approved by the US FDA, a licensed Saudi hospital can ask SFDA for permission to import it for one named patient. This is often called the named-patient route.

SFDA expects the medicine to be registered with at least one reference regulator, such as the US FDA or the European Medicines Agency. The hospital signs a declaration that it takes responsibility for safe use. A licensed importer signs a declaration covering quality during transport. The patient or a legal guardian gives written consent after the treating doctor explains the benefits and risks.

A different route, SFDA's Special Access Program, is for medicines that have no reference approval anywhere, such as products still in clinical trials. It is run through SFDA's clinical trials department and usually starts with the drug's sponsor. Fayuvi does not need that route because it already has FDA approval.

Who does what

  • Your treating specialist decides whether Fayuvi is right for the patient and writes the letter and prescription.
  • The hospital refers the patient, or files a local import request if that becomes possible.
  • The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) decides whether to approve an import of an unregistered medicine.
  • Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical makes Fayuvi and decides where it can be supplied.
  • Reserve Meds can help organize records and logistics, and keeps your family updated. We do not give medical advice.

Documents you will usually need

  • A referral letter from the treating specialist: diagnosis, test results and why this treatment is being considered
  • Genetic or laboratory reports that confirm the diagnosis, translated into English where needed
  • Recent clinic notes, imaging and a list of past treatments
  • Passport and travel documents, if treatment happens abroad
  • A funding plan: personal funds, insurer approval, or a government treatment-abroad decision

Timeline, step by step

  1. Referral. Your specialist prepares a referral letter and the medical records.
  2. Center review. A qualified treatment center reviews the records and decides whether the patient is eligible.
  3. Funding and travel. The family confirms funding and plans travel and accommodation.
  4. Preparation. The center runs tests and, for some products, collects cells or tissue to make the treatment.
  5. Treatment and follow-up. The patient is treated and then followed up by the center and the home specialist.

The overall time is our planning estimate, not a promise. The regulator and the manufacturer set their own timelines.

Can Fayuvi be given in Saudi Arabia instead of abroad?

Only if the manufacturer agrees to supply a hospital in Saudi Arabia and SFDA approves the import. We will tell you honestly if that is not possible today.
