Is Itvisma available in Saudi Arabia?
Itvisma (onasemnogene abeparvovec-brve) is an FDA-approved one-time gene therapy given into the spinal fluid for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in patients aged 2 and older. Itvisma is not in SFDA's public Drugs List. We checked all 9,173 entries by brand and generic name on 17 October 2026. The legal route is a named-patient request: the treating hospital, on your specialist's request, asks the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) for permission to import Itvisma for one patient, using the US FDA approval as the reference. Once approved, Reserve Meds arranges supply through a US-licensed pharmaceutical wholesale partner to the hospital pharmacy. We do not prescribe.
- Registration in Saudi Arabia: not in SFDA's public Drugs List, checked 17 October 2026.
- Legal route: Named-patient import request to SFDA, filed by the treating hospital.
- Who applies: a licensed Saudi hospital, on the written request of your treating consultant.
- Timeline: We give you a written timeline estimate once we see the hospital file. The regulator and the manufacturer set their own timelines.

What Itvisma is
Itvisma (onasemnogene abeparvovec-brve) is made by Novartis Gene Therapies. The US FDA approved it on 24 November 2025 for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in adults and children 2 years of age and older with a confirmed mutation in the SMN1 gene. It is given as a single intrathecal injection (into the fluid around the spinal cord) at a fixed dose, with steroid medicine before and after.
In the main study in the US label, 126 patients aged 2 to 17 who could sit but had never walked on their own received Itvisma or a sham procedure. After about one year, motor scores (HFMSE) rose by 2.39 points with Itvisma and by 0.51 points with the sham procedure. It has a boxed warning for serious liver injury. Liver tests are needed before treatment and for at least 3 months after it. The label also lists low platelets, nerve problems and other risks that the treating team will explain.
It is a different product from Zolgensma, the intravenous gene therapy with the same active substance. Abu Dhabi's Department of Health lists Itvisma with drug codes (release of 26 September 2026). We did not find it in SFDA's public Drugs List when we checked on 17 October 2026.
Registration status in Saudi Arabia
Itvisma is not in SFDA's public Drugs List. We checked all 9,173 entries by brand and generic name on 17 October 2026. The same list does include registered gene and cell therapies such as Zolgensma and Casgevy.
SFDA's list can change. Ask your hospital pharmacy to confirm the status in SFDA's system before anything is filed.
The legal route in Saudi Arabia
Because Itvisma is approved by the US FDA, a licensed Saudi hospital can ask SFDA for permission to import it for one named patient. This is often called the named-patient route.
SFDA expects the medicine to be registered with at least one reference regulator, such as the US FDA or the European Medicines Agency. The hospital signs a declaration that it takes responsibility for safe use. A licensed importer signs a declaration covering quality during transport. The patient or a legal guardian gives written consent after the treating doctor explains the benefits and risks.
SFDA also runs a Special Access Program. Its guidance names the product's sponsor, or the licensed treating physician when there is no sponsor, as the requester. Your hospital pharmacy will know which SFDA route fits your case.
SFDA registered Zolgensma, the intravenous gene therapy with the same active substance, in May 2022. Itvisma is a separate product, so it needs its own registration or an import permission.
Who does what
- Your treating specialist decides whether Itvisma is right for the patient and writes the letter and prescription.
- The hospital checks the route, files any request and is responsible for giving the medicine safely.
- The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) decides whether to approve an import of a medicine that is not registered.
- Novartis Gene Therapies makes Itvisma and decides where it can be supplied.
- Reserve Meds coordinates the paperwork, the US supply through our wholesale partner, shipping and updates to your family. We do not give medical advice.
Documents the hospital will usually need
- A letter from the treating specialist: diagnosis, past treatments, and why Itvisma is needed
- A prescription with the dose and how long treatment should last
- Supporting reports, such as pathology, genetic or laboratory results
- The hospital's request form and its signed declaration of responsibility
- Written consent from the patient or a legal guardian
- Proof of the US FDA approval and the US prescribing information (we can supply these)
Timeline, step by step
- Doctor's letter. Your specialist writes the clinical letter and prescription.
- Hospital request. The hospital pharmacy files the request with SFDA.
- Regulator decision. SFDA reviews the request and issues an approval or asks for more information.
- US sourcing. Our US-licensed wholesale partner supplies the medicine, and it is shipped with the right temperature controls.
- Hospital receipt. The medicine is received at the hospital pharmacy, which gives it to the patient.
We give you a written timeline estimate once we see the hospital file. The regulator and the manufacturer set their own timelines.
