Is Itvisma available in the UAE? How families get Itvisma (onasemnogene abeparvovec-brve)

A plain answer for families in the UAE, checked against FDA, manufacturer and regulator sources.

Reviewed by the Reserve Meds clinical operations team on 17 October 2026.

Is Itvisma available in the UAE?

Itvisma (onasemnogene abeparvovec-brve) is an FDA-approved one-time gene therapy given into the spinal fluid for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in patients aged 2 and older. Itvisma appears in the Abu Dhabi Department of Health drug code list (release of 26 September 2026) with an active code. We could not check the federal EDE directory, so the status outside Abu Dhabi is not confirmed. So the first route to check is the local one, through a qualified Abu Dhabi hospital. If the local route does not work for your family, the treating hospital can ask about an import route. Reserve Meds can help you prepare questions and documents. We do not prescribe.

  • Registration in UAE: listed with an active code in Abu Dhabi's drug code list (26 September 2026); federal status not confirmed.
  • Legal route: Ask a qualified Abu Dhabi hospital first; hospitals in other emirates confirm the route with DHA or EDE.
  • Who applies: the treating hospital, on the request of your treating specialist.
  • Timeline: We give you a written timeline estimate once we see the hospital file. The regulator and the manufacturer set their own timelines.
  • Price: Quote on request. Every case gets a written custom quote before you commit.

What Itvisma is

Itvisma (onasemnogene abeparvovec-brve) is made by Novartis Gene Therapies. The US FDA approved it on 24 November 2025 for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in adults and children 2 years of age and older with a confirmed mutation in the SMN1 gene. It is given as a single intrathecal injection (into the fluid around the spinal cord) at a fixed dose, with steroid medicine before and after.

In the main study in the US label, 126 patients aged 2 to 17 who could sit but had never walked on their own received Itvisma or a sham procedure. After about one year, motor scores (HFMSE) rose by 2.39 points with Itvisma and by 0.51 points with the sham procedure. It has a boxed warning for serious liver injury. Liver tests are needed before treatment and for at least 3 months after it. The label also lists low platelets, nerve problems and other risks that the treating team will explain.

It is a different product from Zolgensma, the intravenous gene therapy with the same active substance. Abu Dhabi's Department of Health lists Itvisma with drug codes (release of 26 September 2026). We did not find it in SFDA's public Drugs List when we checked on 17 October 2026.

Registration status in UAE

Itvisma appears in the Abu Dhabi Department of Health drug code list (release of 26 September 2026) with an active code. We could not check the federal EDE directory, so the status outside Abu Dhabi is not confirmed.

Ask your hospital pharmacy to confirm the current status with DoH in Abu Dhabi, DHA in Dubai, or EDE before anything is filed.

The legal route in the UAE

The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) is the UAE's federal medicines regulator. It was created by Federal Decree No. 28 of 2023 and takes over the medicines role of the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP).

Because Itvisma has an active code in Abu Dhabi, start by asking a qualified Abu Dhabi hospital's neuromuscular team whether it can order Itvisma through the local supply route. A drug code shows that the product is set up in Abu Dhabi's system. It does not tell you about stock, eligibility or funding for the patient.

For hospitals in Dubai or the other emirates, the hospital pharmacy confirms the route with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) or EDE before anything is filed.

Who does what

  • Your treating specialist decides whether Itvisma is right for the patient and writes the letter.
  • The hospital checks the route, files any request and is responsible for giving the medicine safely.
  • The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) regulates medicines at the federal level; DoH and DHA license hospitals in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
  • Novartis Gene Therapies makes Itvisma and decides where it can be supplied.
  • Reserve Meds can help organize records and logistics, and keeps your family updated. We do not give medical advice.

Documents you will usually need

  • A letter from the treating specialist with the diagnosis and why Itvisma is being considered
  • The genetic report that confirms the SMN1 mutation
  • Recent clinic notes and a list of past and current SMA treatments
  • Insurance or funding details

Timeline, step by step

  1. Specialist review. Your specialist decides whether Itvisma is right for the patient.
  2. Hospital check. The hospital pharmacy checks supply through the local route and what approvals it needs.
  3. Funding. The family confirms insurer approval or another source of funding.
  4. Treatment and follow-up. The hospital gives the treatment and follows the monitoring plan in the label.

We give you a written timeline estimate once we see the hospital file. The regulator and the manufacturer set their own timelines.
