Is Lenmeldy available in the UAE? Status, route and cost
A plain answer for families in the UAE, checked against FDA, regulator and manufacturer sources on 17 October 2026.

Is Lenmeldy available in the UAE?
Lenmeldy is not in Abu Dhabi's official drug list (checked 17 October 2026), and its federal status is unverified. It is a one-time gene therapy for early-onset metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) in children, given only at specialized centers. The realistic routes are a qualified center abroad, or a hospital import if the manufacturer agrees and EDE approves.
- Registration: Not found in the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH) drug code list (release of 26 September 2026); we could not verify its federal EDE status.
- Access route: Treatment at a qualified center abroad, or a hospital import request to EDE if the manufacturer agrees.
- Who acts: your specialist refers the patient abroad; a hospital in the UAE applies to EDE only if the manufacturer agrees to supply it.
- Timeline: We give you a written timeline estimate for your case before you commit.
- Medicine price: quote on request. Every case gets a written custom quote before you commit.

What Lenmeldy is
Lenmeldy (atidarsagene autotemcel) is made by Orchard Therapeutics. The US FDA approved Lenmeldy on 18 March 2024 for children with pre-symptomatic late infantile, pre-symptomatic early juvenile, or early symptomatic early juvenile metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). It was the first FDA-approved treatment for children with MLD.
How it is given: A one-time infusion made from the child's own blood stem cells, given after high-dose chemotherapy at a qualified treatment center. High-dose chemotherapy before the infusion has serious risks that the transplant team will explain. It is approved in the European Union and the UK under the name Libmeldy. In 2021 Orchard announced partners to help eligible patients from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman reach qualified treatment centers in Europe.
How access works in the UAE
Lenmeldy is given only at specialized treatment centers. It is not a medicine a family can collect, or a clinic can give in an outpatient room.
For a family in the UAE, that leaves two realistic routes. First, treatment at a qualified center abroad, after your specialist refers you and the center accepts the patient. Second, a hospital in the UAE asks the manufacturer, Orchard Therapeutics, whether it will supply that hospital. If the manufacturer agrees, the hospital still needs import approval from the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE). We cannot promise that a manufacturer will agree.
How a hospital import request works in the UAE, if it is ever needed:
The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) is the UAE's federal medicines regulator. It was created by Federal Decree No. 28 of 2023 and took over the medicines role of the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). Medicines normally have to be registered before they are used.
For a medicine that is not registered, the treating hospital asks for approval to import it for a specific patient. The hospital signs an undertaking that it takes responsibility for the medicine's use and shows that the medicine is registered in its country of origin. FDA approval makes this easier. The medicine stays inside the hospital system and cannot be resold.
Hospitals in Abu Dhabi are licensed by the Department of Health (DoH), and hospitals in Dubai by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). Your hospital pharmacy knows which office handles the file for your hospital today.
The Abu Dhabi list covers coded products in that emirate. Ask the hospital pharmacy to confirm the current status with EDE and, for Abu Dhabi or Dubai hospitals, with DoH or DHA.
Who does what
- Your treating specialist decides whether Lenmeldy is right for the patient and writes the referral or prescription.
- The hospital or treatment center checks eligibility, plans treatment and is responsible for giving it safely.
- The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) registers medicines and decides on any import request for a medicine that is not registered.
- Orchard Therapeutics makes Lenmeldy and decides where it can be supplied.
- Reserve Meds helps your family understand the steps, organizes records and communication, and, where an import is needed, arranges US supply through our licensed wholesale partner. We do not give medical advice.
Documents you will usually need
- Genetic and enzyme test results confirming MLD, and the child's current symptoms and age
- A referral letter from the treating specialist with the diagnosis, past treatments and why this treatment is being considered
- Recent clinic notes, imaging and laboratory results
- Identity documents and a funding plan (personal funds, insurer approval or a government treatment decision)
- Passport and travel documents, if treatment happens abroad
Steps
- Referral. Your specialist prepares a referral letter and the medical records.
- Center review. A qualified treatment center reviews the records and decides whether the patient is eligible.
- Funding. The family confirms funding with the center, an insurer or a government program.
- Preparation. The center runs tests and, for cell-based products, collects cells to make the treatment.
- Treatment and follow-up. The patient is treated and then followed up by the center and the home specialist.
Timeline and cost
We give you a written timeline estimate for your case before you commit. The treating center, the regulator and the manufacturer set their own timelines.
Medicine price: quote on request. Your total cost depends on the dose, travel or shipping, import steps and coordination. Your coordination fee is quoted in writing for your case before you commit. No hidden charges.
How Reserve Meds helps
Reserve Meds is a digital health company. Medicines are supplied through a US-licensed pharmaceutical wholesale partner. We coordinate access to FDA-approved medicines only. We help your family understand the route, organize records and communication with the hospital or center, and, where an import is approved, arrange US supply and shipping. We do not prescribe, and we do not decide what the regulator or a treatment center approves.
