Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS): US-approved treatments and how Gulf families can access them

A plain guide for families in the Gulf, checked against US FDA labels, Gulf drug registers and published medical research.

Reviewed by the Reserve Meds clinical operations team on 17 October 2026.

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome: the short answer

For Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, the US FDA has approved one medicine covered on this page, for a specific group of patients: Waskyra. Where a medicine is not registered in your country, the treating hospital can ask the national regulator for permission to import it for one named patient. Reserve Meds is a digital health company that helps families and hospitals with that process. We do not diagnose or prescribe.

  • US FDA-approved medicines on this page: Waskyra.
  • Gulf registration (checked 17 October 2026): see each medicine below.
  • Legal route: Treatment at a qualified center, after a specialist referral.
  • Price: Quote on request.

What is Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome?

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome causes immune deficiency, eczema and a reduced ability to form blood clots. It mainly affects males. Platelets are fewer and smaller than normal from birth, which can lead to easy bruising, bloody diarrhea and prolonged bleeding. Bleeding inside the brain can be life-threatening. Abnormal white blood cells raise the risk of infections and of immune and inflammatory disorders.[1]

It is caused by mutations in the WAS gene and is inherited in an X-linked pattern. The estimated incidence is between 1 and 10 cases per million males worldwide.[1]

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome in the Gulf

We did not find recent published Gulf-specific figures for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome that we could verify, so we do not give any. Because it is X-linked, mothers and sisters may carry the gene change; a genetic counselor can explain testing for the family.[1]

Waskyra is for patients who need a stem cell transplant but have no suitable HLA-matched related donor. On 17 October 2026 it was not found in the SFDA drugs list or the Abu Dhabi Department of Health drug code list. It is made from the patient's own stem cells, so treatment involves a center that can collect the cells and give the infusion.[2, 3, 4]

US FDA-approved medicines for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome

Each medicine below is approved in the US for a specific group of patients. The wording follows the current US label. Your specialist decides whether any of them is right for the patient.

  • Waskyra (etuvetidigene autotemcel)
FDA-approved for children aged 6 months and older and adults with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome caused by a WAS gene mutation, when a stem cell transplant is appropriate but no suitable HLA-matched related donor is available. It is made from the patient's own blood stem cells and given by intravenous infusion.[5, 2]
US FDA approval: 9 December 2025. Gulf registers: Saudi Arabia: not found in the SFDA drugs list. Abu Dhabi: not found in the Abu Dhabi DoH drug code list. Checked 17 October 2026. Kuwait, Qatar and Oman: no public register checked.[3, 4]

How families in the Gulf can access these medicines

For Waskyra. These are made for one patient or given through a specialized procedure, so treatment happens at a qualified center. For most Gulf families that means a referral from the treating specialist to a center abroad that can give the treatment. A local hospital can only give it if the manufacturer agrees to supply that hospital and the regulator approves the import. We cannot promise that a manufacturer will agree.

Who does what

  • Your treating specialist decides whether a medicine is right for the patient and writes the letter.
  • The hospital checks local supply, files any import request, and gives the treatment safely.
  • The national regulator decides whether to approve the import of a medicine that is not registered.
  • The manufacturer decides where its medicine can be supplied, especially for cell and gene therapies.
  • Reserve Meds helps organize records, coordinates US supply through our wholesale partner, shipping and updates to your family. We do not give medical advice.

Documents you will usually need

  • A letter from the treating specialist with the diagnosis, past treatments and why this medicine is being considered
  • Reports that confirm the diagnosis, such as genetic, pathology or laboratory results, translated into English where needed
  • Recent clinic notes and a list of current medicines
  • For a hospital import request: the prescription, the hospital's request form and the written consent of the patient or guardian
  • Proof of the US FDA approval and the US prescribing information (we can supply these)

We give you a written timeline estimate once we see the hospital file. The regulator, the treatment center and the manufacturer set their own timelines.
