Is Zolgensma available in Qatar? Status, route and cost

A plain answer for families in Qatar, checked against FDA, regulator and manufacturer sources on 17 October 2026.

Is Zolgensma available in Qatar?

We could not confirm the status of Zolgensma in Qatar, because we found no public drug register. It is a one-time gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy in children under 2, given only at specialized centers. If no local center offers it, families use a qualified center abroad, or a hospital import if the manufacturer agrees.

  • Registration: Not confirmed: we found no public searchable drug register for Qatar.
  • Access route: A center in Qatar if one offers it; otherwise treatment abroad, or a hospital import request to MoPH if the manufacturer agrees.
  • Who acts: your specialist refers the patient abroad; a hospital in Qatar applies to MoPH only if the manufacturer agrees to supply it.
  • Timeline: We give you a written timeline estimate for your case before you commit.
  • Medicine price: quote on request. Every case gets a written custom quote before you commit.

What Zolgensma is

Zolgensma (onasemnogene abeparvovec) is made by Novartis Gene Therapies. The US FDA first approved Zolgensma on 24 May 2019. It is approved for children under 2 years old with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) caused by mutations in both copies of the SMN1 gene.

How it is given: A single intravenous (IV) infusion given in hospital, with liver tests and monitoring before and after. Timing matters in SMA, so families should speak with the child's neurologist early.

How access works in Qatar

Zolgensma is given only at specialized treatment centers. It is not a medicine a family can collect, or a clinic can give in an outpatient room.

For a family in Qatar, that leaves two realistic routes. First, treatment at a qualified center abroad, after your specialist refers you and the center accepts the patient. Second, a hospital in Qatar asks the manufacturer, Novartis Gene Therapies, whether it will supply that hospital. If the manufacturer agrees, the hospital still needs import approval from the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH). We cannot promise that a manufacturer will agree.

How a hospital import request works in Qatar, if it is ever needed:

In Qatar, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), through its Department of Pharmacy and Drug Control, supervises the registration and importation of medicines.

For a medicine that is not registered in Qatar, the treating hospital asks MoPH for approval to import it for the patient. Your hospital pharmacy prepares the request and confirms the current MoPH procedure.

Ask the hospital pharmacy to confirm the current status with MoPH's Department of Pharmacy and Drug Control before anything is filed.

Who does what

  • Your treating specialist decides whether Zolgensma is right for the patient and writes the referral or prescription.
  • The hospital or treatment center checks eligibility, plans treatment and is responsible for giving it safely.
  • The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) registers medicines and decides on any import request for a medicine that is not registered.
  • Novartis Gene Therapies makes Zolgensma and decides where it can be supplied.
  • Reserve Meds helps your family understand the steps, organizes records and communication, and, where an import is needed, arranges US supply through our licensed wholesale partner. We do not give medical advice.

Documents you will usually need

  • Genetic confirmation of SMA (both copies of SMN1 affected) and the child's age and weight
  • A referral letter from the treating specialist with the diagnosis, past treatments and why this treatment is being considered
  • Recent clinic notes, imaging and laboratory results
  • Identity documents and a funding plan (personal funds, insurer approval or a government treatment decision)
  • Passport and travel documents, if treatment happens abroad

Steps

  1. Referral. Your specialist prepares a referral letter and the medical records.
  2. Center review. A qualified treatment center reviews the records and decides whether the patient is eligible.
  3. Funding. The family confirms funding with the center, an insurer or a government program.
  4. Preparation. The center runs tests and, for cell-based products, collects cells to make the treatment.
  5. Treatment and follow-up. The patient is treated and then followed up by the center and the home specialist.

How Reserve Meds helps

Reserve Meds is a digital health company. Medicines are supplied through a US-licensed pharmaceutical wholesale partner. We coordinate access to FDA-approved medicines only. We help your family understand the route, organize records and communication with the hospital or center, and, where an import is approved, arrange US supply and shipping. We do not prescribe, and we do not decide what the regulator or a treatment center approves.
